What? On 13-15 May 2008, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia – over 1 million students from over 9,000 schools – will sit the same tests in Literacy and Numeracy. These tests will replace the current State and Territory-based assessments.
In NAPLAN, Literacy includes: • Reading • Writing • Language Conventions (which comprises spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Numeracy comprises: • Number • Algebra, function and pattern • Space • Measurement, chance and data.
When?
• 13 May 2008 – Language Conventions and Writing • 14 May 2008 – Reading • 15 May 2008 – Numeracy
Purpose? The results from these national literacy and numeracy tests will provide an important measure of how Australian schools and students are performing in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The results from the assessment program will be used for individual student reporting to parents, school reporting to their communities, and aggregate reporting by States and Territories against national standards.
