About this book

This book follows a clear progression of mathematical skills and understandings. Every aspect of the syllabus for Year 4 is addressed, from the six strands to each of the individual outcomes. This book is laid out in 4 terms of work, with each double page spread dealt with as a unit on the teaching guide.
Each student book provides the necessary learning experiences to help students move from the concrete and pictorial to the more abstract. The books also provide independent practice of specific skills to help consolidate concepts.

This has been achieved by meticulous attention to detail with:
- Progressive development, with clear modelling and strong support.
- The choice of activities, with many real world and high-interest examples.
- Instructions that are clear, easy to read and at an appropriate reading level.
- Colourful illustrations that are meaningful and aid students' understanding.
- Regular challenges for more able students.
- Reinforcement and revision of key concepts.
- The structured development of a wide range of mental calculations strategies.
- Working mathematically and problem solving integrated across the series - problem solving using a range of strategies including drawing a diagram, looking for patterns, trial and error and working backwards.

The all new Targeting Maths workbooks provide complete coverage of the 2002 NSW Maths syllabus.
Targeting Maths is designed to provide you with everything you need to teach the new maths course in a way that you will find easy to implement and your students will enjoy. With an increased focus on number sense and mental strategies, the new course extends students mathematically, but with this new program to help, you and your students won't find the transition difficult.
We, at Pascal Press, have a passion for making maths exciting and enjoyable for all! We believe that if we succeed in doing this, then learning outcomes will be improved for all students, from the weakest to the best. This has been our guiding principle in the development of Targeting Maths. We want to provide students with books that are so stimulating and well-structured that every student will look forward to opening up their workbook each day.
The student workbooks are supported by comprehensive and easy-to-use Teaching Guides that provide you with everything you need. The Teaching Guides are directly linked to the 12 book Targeting Maths BLM books published by Blake Education that many schools already have. The hundreds of well-organised, photocopiable worksheets in these books mean you will never be short of remedial, extension or assessment material.
WARNING!
Once your students have used these books, they will want to do maths everyday. How the Targeting Maths scheme will work for you. The Targeting Maths scheme follows a clear progression of mathematical skills and understandings from Kindergarten to Year Six. Every aspect of the syllabus is addressed, from the six strands to each of the individual outcomes at every level.

Targeting Maths K - 2
The student books from Year K to Year 2 are laid out in 4 terms of work. Each double spread is dealt with as a unit in the Teaching Guide.
A unit on numbers to 50 from the Year One student workbook.
Many activities use strong visual examples that connect to children's practical experience.
Challenges appear regularly to extend your more able students.
Revision pages appear at the end of each term of work. This is a page from Year One.
Each book includes a dictionary of mathematical terms used at that level. This page is from the Kindergarten book.

Targeting Maths 3 - 6
The student books from Year 3 to year 6 are laid out as four terms of topic-based units of work. Each unit is 3 or 4 pages long.
Each unit begins with a focus page. The large focus picture gets children's attention and in many cases it is a high-interest, real-life situation. Focus pages are good for all ability levels as they include open-ended questions and active participation. Even the weakest student can perform the task because the visual image is so helpful.
They are also useful for revision. Return to the page and use it for mental warm-ups before a lesson. Photos of real things are an exciting feature of the scheme and serve to connect maths to real life. The outcome number and the relevant pointers are written in full at the base of each page. Information notes at the top of the page reinforce mathematical language and important facts. Problem solving strategies such as looking for patterns appear regularly. The other strategies covered include drawing a diagram, trial and error and working backwards. Number lines are a proven mathematical tool for visualising the number system and to support calculations. This powerful visual aid creates a direct relationship between calculations and algorithms. The abstract nature of algorithms is demystified as children jump along a number line to add or subtract. Challenges appear regularly to extend your more able students.
Teaching Guides for Years K - 2
The Teaching and Discuss section introduces the topic with an interesting activity and discussion. Outcomes and pointers covered in this unit. The key words that students need to understand. A list of all extra materials used in any of the activities. Additional worksheets in Targeting Maths blackline master books. Mental and oral strategies can be used to introduce the lesson, or as mental warm-ups that reinforce previous learning and basic facts. The Activity Bank provides a range of practical activities for the unit that present the mathematical content in a variety of ways. A BLM with each unit provides another resource for each topic. A variety of assessment BLMs are also included.

Teaching Guides for Years 3 - 6
The teaching guide is set out in units of work. Each unit is laid out in the same format for ease of use and is directly linked to 3 ¨C 5 pages of the student book. The teaching resources provided include teaching notes, oral, mental and hands-on activities, two activity cards, and an assessment blackline master. The sequence of units provides a guide to the order of presentation. This follows the same order as suggested in the student book. However, this is flexible and teachers can choose their own progression through the course. Teaching notes for the focus page and other pages in the student book. The large illustration on the focus page is the basis for a class discussion of the topic. Outcomes and pointers covered in this unit. The key words that students need to understand. A list of all extra materials used in any of the activities. Additional worksheets in Targeting. Maths blackline master books. Answers to the assessment page in the Teaching Guide. Mental and oral strategies can be used to introduce the lesson, or as mental warm-ups that reinforce previous learning and basic facts. The Activity Bank provides a range of practical activities for the unit that present the mathematical content in a variety of ways. Changing the presentation of a topic can support students with different learning styles or who are struggling with the concept. Activity Cards are designed for individuals, pairs or small groups. This information is clearly marked on each card. The two Activity Cards can be used as reinforcement; for fast-finishers; for homework or for fun. The Assessment page can be used to assess students understanding of a topic and to determine areas which need reinforcement.
