The Targeting Maths program answers what has been a challenging question for teachers.

How do I motivate all my students, whatever their abilities, to actively learn and enjoy maths?

Mathematical ability is a foundation stone for student success at school. But teachers told us there were things missing from existing math programs. Teachers and our research highlighted a range of issues that needed addressing.

These included:

Connections

When students can connect mathematical ideas, their understanding is deeper and more lasting. Connections to a child's work or play and to other learning areas makes maths, relevant and easier to learn. (NCTM, 2000)

Number sense

Number sense refers to a person's general understanding of numbers and operations. People with number sense have a flexible approach and can develop useful strategies for solving complex problems. (Burton, 1993; Reys, 1991)

Mental computation

Mental computation is the deriving of exact answers to mathematical calculations without the use of recording devices such as computers, calculators, or writing instruments (Reys, B. 1985; Reys & Barger, 1994). Up to 80% of mathematical computations performed in non-technical settings, such as the exchange of money or the determination of times and distances, are done mentally. (Reys & Nohda, 1994).

Problem solving

Problem solving is an integral part of all mathematics learning. In everyday life and in the workplace, being able to solve problems can lead to great advantages. (NCTM 2000)

Communicating mathematical understandings

Mathematics lessons should be interesting and challenging, and encourage students to express their thoughts and opinions. (B.O.S. 2001)

Assessment

Assessment that is aligned with curriculum and instruction ensures that all students have the opportunity to achieve their potential. (NCTM, 2000)

With Targeting Maths, the comprehensive maths program, all six of these issues have been fully addressed in a series that offers you complete coverage of the NSW, VIC and QLD syllabus. Every page is motivating, child friendly, connected to real life and enjoyable. With comprehensive teacher support in the Teaching Guide there is always enough work for your fast-finishers and extra support for your slower learners. Our CD-ROM series,
Targeting Maths Lab, bring fundamental maths concepts into a games situation to make reinforcement of basic concepts fun.
