Primary school learning encompasses entire-class, group and individual activities designed to develop an inquiring mind and teach the basic skills required for a complete education. Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning and take up half of students' learning time in primary school. This makes understanding the key concepts of English and Mathematics critical to your child's educational success.
As a parent, you may want to:
- Provide at-home learning opportunities to build upon and reinforce basic skills in English, Mathematics or Science taught in the classroom
- Give your child extra practice in subjects they may be struggling with
- Motivate and extend your child with at-home challenges
How can you implement at-home learning?
Our range of Excel titles have been written to reflect the expected level of ability a child should posses at each school year. Using these titles, you can assess your child's ability in a range of primary key learning areas and, based on the results, take the next necessary steps to help with your child's education. Titles in this range include worked solutions, allowing you to work through answers with your child.
Let’s look at an example. Your child has completed the first two English comprehension units in Excel Basic Skills: English and Mathematics Year 3. You have filled out the English Marking Grid at the beginning of the book and can see that your child has answered two questions in each unit incorrectly. On the page opposite your marking grid, there is a Sample Marking Grid showing related Excel titles that will help in improving your child's skills in this area. In this case, the Sample English Marking Grid recommends Excel Basic Skills Comprehension & Written Expression Year 3 for extra practice and tuition in comprehension.
Help your child to excel in primary school:
- Be encouraging. Attitudes your child forms about studying in their primary years, will shape their actions in later school years
- Provide clear feedback. Using our range of Excel titles for primary school, you will immediately see where your child needs help. Use this feedback to tailor an at-home study program
- If your child is struggling, try working through the Excel Core books for the year level lower. Revision solidifies skills and builds confidence.
- If your child is excelling, try challenging your child by going up a year level in the Excel Core books or choosing a specific topic book a year level higher. You could even try the Excel Problem Solving, Chance, Data and Graphs books for years 3–6
Remember, all children learn differently and at different rates. Early identification of areas your child may not be as confident in is the key to providing a successful, confident pathway to educational success.
